Marylou Lawrence, was born April 18th 1968, in Manteca California, the daughter of immigrant parents from Terceira Azores. Her parents after being here in the states for 7 years, started their own dairy farm business and raised Marylou in the same old-fashion way, speaking Portuguese and listening to Portuguese music, like most other Luso-American kids did.
Always interested in music, her love for fado became evident as her mother played records of Amalia Rodrigues and of other famous fadistas while growing up.
Beginning at the age of 12 while in school, she enrolled in choir learning about variations of classical and gospel music, from junior high through high school. Singing for various city and social events her passion for singing fado never left her mind.
After getting married at the very young age of 18, and raising a family, the idea of singing fado had to be placed on hold for a while. After the age of 45 with encouragement from her loving husband Steve Lawrence, Marylou decided to begin singing again.
Marylou's journey started with the encouragement, guidance and constructive critism of the “7 Sete Colinas” guiatarists (Helder Carvalheira, Manuel Escobardo, Joao Cardadeiro), which has carved out her path directed towards her true passion of fado.
Getting her first taste of singing fado at the Elk Grove Divino Espirito Santo Festa “Noite de Fados” May 2012, with Paulo Filipe from Canada, Sandra Pacheco from San Jose, accompanied by “7 Sete Colinas”guitarists. Marylou has continued to be invited to sing fado in several other events across California, along with other well known fadistas such as David S. Garcia, Zelia Freitas, Isalino Santos, and most well known Sara Pacheco, and many others. Most recently was invited to go to Pawtucket, Rhode Island and sing fado at an event called “ Amigos Da Terceira”.
Marylou is working on her first CD called “Nunca E Tarde...Para o Fado”. Two of the fados on the CD, “Nunca E Tarde” and “I am for the Fado”, Lyrics for both fados written by Sr. Jose Raposo, and music by Marylou Lawrence and Gilbert Machado. The music on this CD expresses her true love for fado, and how emotional fado can become.
Through the grace of God, courage of conviction, and the most of all the love from her family and true friends, has catapulted her in the journey of what we call, fado.
